Shimoda Black Ship Festival 2026 – Fireworks & Events Guide

Every May, the historic port town of Shimoda on the Izu Peninsula hosts one of its most exciting annual events — the Black Ship Festival.

The festival commemorates the arrival of Commodore Perry and the U.S. fleet in 1854, which led to the opening of Japan to the world.
First held in 1934, the festival celebrates friendship between Japan and the United States.

During the three-day event, the city becomes lively with parades, ceremonies, concerts, and cultural performances.
